Should smoking be banned inside council housing?

Professor John Middleton, president of the Faculty of Public Health, said some councils are considering introducing contracts where anyone signing a new tenancy agreement with their local authority should be forced to sign an agreement not to smoke inside their new home.

The plan would be similar to a scheme in the US where public housing agencies will have to make their houses smoke-free by next year.

Simon Clark, the head of pro-smoking campaign Forest, is against the idea. He told the newspaper that the move would be an unnecessary intrusion into people’s private lives.

He added that a ban “would penalise unfairly those who can’t afford to buy their own homes”.

Today I want to know what you think – would you be in favour of banning smoking in council houses? Or is that a ridiculous suggestion?

Honestly I don’t know how it would be policed but if the UK goes ahead with the plan then you can be sure we will follow suit.
